History and Significance of Canada Day

On July 1, 1867, Canada achieved a self-governing dominion status. Three colonies of the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were unified into a single dominion within the British empire under the British North Americas Act. The country's boundaries were extended since 1867 and today has 10 provinces and three territories.

By the terms of Canada Act of 1982, the British North America Act was repatriated from the British to the Canadian Parliament, and Canada became a fully independent country.

Canada's Governor General had proclaimed that Canadians should celebrate the anniversary of the confederation. July 1 came to be known as Dominion Day. However, it was not until the 50th anniversary in 1917 that any kind of celebrations was held. After WWII, there was an increased enthusiasm about Dominion Day and more events were organised by the government itself. The celebrations then eventually became more popular after the centenary of the confederation in 1967. Since 1983, the day was termed as Canada Day.
