Buddha Purnima 2018: Sudarsan Pattnaik’s Sand Art with Message of World Peace
Buddha Purnima is a significant day as it commemorates the birth, death and the enlightenment of Lord Buddha, all of which is said to have taken place on the same day.
Buddha Purnima or Vesak marks the birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The date for the celebration of Buddha Purnima varies from year to year but usually falls in April or May. Buddha Purnima 2018 or Vesak falls on April 30. On this auspicious occasion, renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a beautiful 3D sand art with a message that read ‘World Peace’.
The sand art depicts Gautama Buddha sitting under a Peepal tree in a meditative position with a stone between his palms with ‘Peace’ written on the stone. Sudarsan wished Buddha Purnima to everyone by writing ‘Bring peace to all’.

Since the auspicious occasion falls on a full moon day or Purnima, the occasion is referred as Buddha Purnima in India. It is a significant day as it commemorates the birth, death and the enlightenment of Lord Buddha, all of which is said to have taken place on the same day. Sudarsan Pattnaik was awarded Padma Shri by Government of India in 2014 for his contribution in sand arts.
