Bonalu Significance
The word ‘Bonam’ is derived from the word ‘Bhojanam’ a Sanskrit word that translates to a meal or feast in Telugu. Bonalu is a festival that dates back to the 18th century. It is believed to have originated during a plague epidemic in 1813 that devastated the twin cities. Prior to this, a military unit from Hyderabad was stationed in Ujjaini, home to the famed Shiva temple. When the military unit learned about the virus hitting the cities, they became concerned about their safety and their families. The soldiers stationed at Ujjaini prayed to the Mother Goddess at the Mahakali Temple in Ujjaini, Madhya Pradesh. The battalion is believed to have prayed to eradicate the plague, and if she did, they promised to install an idol of the Goddess in the city after they return home. The festival is not just a religious event but a cultural phenomenon, embodying the community's collective spirit and reverence for the Goddess.
Bonalu Rituals and Celebrations
The celebrations are marked by a series of vibrant rituals and processions. Women, dressed in traditional attire, carry decorated pots on their heads, filled with rice, jaggery, curd, and neem leaves, as an offering to the Goddess. The pots are adorned with turmeric, vermillion, and a lamp, symbolising light and prosperity. This procession is accompanied by rhythmic drum beats, folk music, and dances, creating an atmosphere of joy and devotion.
Temples are beautifully decorated with flowers, lights, and rangolis. Special pujas and rituals are performed, with the most significant ones taking place at the Mahakali temples in Golconda, Secunderabad, and Hyderabad. Devotees throng these temples to seek the blessings of the Goddess, ensuring her protection and prosperity for the community.
Bonalu has grown in scale and grandeur over the years. The Telangana government officially recognises the festival, promoting it as a significant cultural event. This has led to increased participation and enthusiasm, not only among locals but also attracting tourists who are eager to witness this unique celebration.
