Bathukamma is an important annual festival for the people of Telangana and is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm. The festival represents the cultural spirit of Telangana. In Telugu, ‘Bathukamma' means ‘Mother Goddess coming alive’. During the festival, a beautiful flower stack is arranged with different seasonal flowers, most of them with medicinal values, in seven concentric layers in the shape of a temple gopuram. It is usually brothers who bring flowers to their mother and sisters to arrange the Bathukamma.

Bathukamma is followed by a 7-day festival called as Boddemma. The Boddemma festival marks the ending of Varsha Ruthu whereas Bathukamma marks the beginning of Sarad or Sharath Ruthu.
