Hyderabad, August 9: A group of techies in Hyderabad has developed an application to bring buyers and sheep sellers on the same platform ahead of Bakrid or Eid Al-Adha. It is mandatory for financially-stable Muslims to sacrifice a goat or sheep or cattle or buffalo or camel on Bakrid, also written as Bakra Eid. They have to struggle a lot to find a healthy animal at an affordable rate. The 'Bakra app' will solve these issues, developers said.

According to Mohammed Jafar, a techie, who co-founded the company which developed the 'Bakra app', the application works as an aggregator which brings buyers and independent sheep sellers on the same platform. Vendors share pictures of the sheep with details such as price, breed, weight and distance from the user’s current location. What makes the 'Bakra app' unique, Jafar said, is the 'Qurbani service'. Under the 'Qurbani service', Muslims can buy a sheep weighing between 11 kg and 14 kg for Rs 10,999. They don't have to worry about the rest of the things, including slaughtering and division, and delivery of meat. The Qurbani will be done in compliance with Islamic rules. The meet will be divided into three portions and delivered to a place of the buyer's choice.

"For the Qurbani service, we have tied up with suppliers. People aware of the rules such as an imam is available to supervise Qurbani. The meat is hygienically divided and packed in food-grade packaging. We give slots to those who book the service and the meat is delivered on schedule," he added.

The ritual of sacrificing an animal commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command. According to religious scriptures, Ibrahim was asked to sacrifice the dearest thing he possesses. Hence, he decided to sacrifice the life of his son. His son Ismaeel too agreed to get killed as an act of obedience to God’s command.

When Ibrahim attempted to cut the throat of his son, he was astonished to see that his son was replaced by a ham, which was slaughtered. Bakrid in India will be celebrated on August 12.
