Significance And Religious History: Bakrd Eid commemorates willingness of Prophet Imrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command. According to religious scriptures, Ibrahim was asked to sacrifice the dearest thing he possesses. Hence, he decided to sacrifice the life of his son. His son Ismaeel (according to Islamic faith) too agreed to get killed as an act of obedience to God’s command.

Ibrahim took his son to mount Arafat. While he was on his way, Shaitan or Satan (the Devil) tempted Ibrahim and his family by trying to dissuade them from carrying out God's commandment. However, Ibrahim drove Satan away by pelting stones at him. When Ibrahim attepted to cut throat of his son, he was astonished to see that his son was was replaced by a ham, which was slaughtered. Some belive Ismaeel was replaced by a sheep. Ismaeel was unharmed.

This incident is mentioned in Bible as well as in Torah with minor changes. However, Chritisans and Jews don't celebrate Bakra Eid or Eid-ul-Adha to mark the event. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, it is mandatory for financially stable Muslims to sacrifice a bovine or cattle and distribute its meat among their relatives and poor section of the community.
