The eighth month in the Gregorian Calendar, August is here. And, it is full of festivals and events. Like, literally, we are celebrating or observing an important day this month. We have major Hindu and Muslim festivals such as Hariyali Teej, Raksha Bandhan, Krishna Janmashtami to Eid al-Adha. There is also a Christmas in August. August corresponds to Sawan or Shraavana of the Hindu calendar. It is considered as a holy month of fasting as several auspicious festivals fall during this period. In this first week of August 2019, the important days are Hariyali Teej, a Hindu festival observed by married women for the long life of their husband. Hariyali Teej 2019 will be celebrated on August 3 (Saturday). The next day, on August 4 (Sunday), two important days will take place – Friendship Day and Sister’s Day. On August 5, Naga Panchami will take place along with Kalki Jayanti, Skanda Sashti. This Monday will also be Third Shraavana Somvar Vrat.

The second week of the month will see Hindu fasts and festivities such as Tulsidas Jayanti on August 7 (Wednesday), Masik Durgashtami on August 8 (Thursday), Varalakshmi Vratam on August 9 (Friday) and Shravana Putrada Ekadashi on August 11 (Sunday). However, this week’s biggest celebration will take place on August 12 (Monday) with Muslim festival Eid al-Adha, also known as Sacrifice Feast or Bakrid or Bakra-Eid or Eid al-Baqarah. There are international events this week such as International Youth Day, International Lefthanders Day.

Two of month’s biggest observance will be held on August 15 (Thursday) – Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day of India. Raksha Bandhan is traditionally a Hindu ceremony dedicated to siblings where a sister ties a rakhi (amulet) around the wrist of their brothers and pray for his long life and prosperity. And then there’s Independence Day 2019. India will be commemorating the nation's independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947.
