Akshay Urja Day is celebrated on August 20 every year since 2004. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India initiated Akshay Urja Day in 2004 and it has been celebrated ever since. They chose the date August 20, the birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to observe National Renewable Energy Day. The first function was organised at New Delhi in 2004 and 2005 followed by Nagpur in 2006, Hyderabad in 2007 and Panchkula in 2008.
