The fashion festival will bring back the styles of the 1870s and familiarise people with the trends of the 19th and 20th centuries to the current ones. The Met says the theme was influenced by French philosopher Henri Bergson's concept of "la durée" — time that flows, accumulates and is indivisible. The exhibition will feature 160 pieces of women's clothing, most of which will be designed at the Costume Institute. Virginia Woolf will serve as the "ghost narrator."
The Metropolitan Museum of Art states in a press release states, "The exhibition will explore how clothes generate temporal associations that conflate the past, present, and future." Max Hollein, director of the Met, said the exhibition will "consider the ephemeral nature of fashion, employing flashbacks and fast-forwards to reveal how it can be both linear and cyclical". Wintour's co-chairs for Met Gala 2020 are Emma Stone, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep and Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Louis Vuitton. The theme for the 2019 Met Gala was "Camp: Notes on Fashion", inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on 'Camp'".
