The union minister of textiles, Smriti Irani made quite a thrilling announcement at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2019 regarding the size-standards of apparels. Irani stated that the textile and garments industry will get its own country-specific size after US, UK and Europe. With this, the challenges of size definitions by different countries and for the Indians to be able to fit into those, will reduce drastically. A defined Indian size will make things much more smooth for the fashion and textiles industry.

During the summit, Irani quoted, “In the apparel export segment, one of the biggest challenges is that the UK has a size, the US has a size, Europe has a size and a measure, but India does not. I hereby present a resolution by the government of India that soon, a size India project will be rolled out in the entire country; the first of its kind in Indian history." It definitely is a milestone to be achieved by the country. On the same, the Union Minister also added, "The centre will embark upon a study to come up with an India-specific size and measure in textile and garments."

For the success of this project, statistical study about the domestic demand in the Indian textile market will be conducted."Ours is a country which has the capacity to create huge demands not only for domestic industry but also for the overseas industry. Never before in the history of our country was a study done to ascertain the strength and magnitude of our domestic market. The government of India will soon embark upon a statistical study to actually categorize the entire domestic demand of the Indian market so that it becomes a base for policy creation and to further strengthen industry and manufacturing possibilities."

The summit saw various companies from the textile sector such as Welspun India, Chiiripal Group and Jindal Worldwide, to name a few. Smriti Irani has also said that a resolution is being worked out regarding the iissue of embedded taxes and rebate on state levies. She stated that the resolution will soon be resolved by the PM.
