Among the different peculiar factors that had gotten us intrigued for each season, one was constant throughout. Yes, we are talking about the costume department that played a crucial role every time. From Daenerys Targaryen's evolving fashion to Cersei Lannister's authoritative change, each season had a dedicated range of attires that revolve around its narrative and were designed keeping the hierarchy and minute detailing in mind. The costume department designing attires for Jon Snow was in two minds about him wearing that long and heavy cape. The cape is a tribute to his father, Ned Stark, whom he respected immensely. However, the department decided to keep it occasional. "There are times when we removed it because we wanted him to be more vulnerable. Especially I think, when he saw Dany, and he went to see her for the first time in her chamber. We decided to remove it, but then when he went to see Cersei, we put it on," said costume designer Michele Clapton to Uproxx.

How will you react if we say the capes you saw on different characters are ordinary rugs? The ones that you find in the usual furnishing shops. In one of her interactions, Clapton was heard narrating how she shops the usual rugs from Ikea and turns them into capes. “Those capes are actually IKEA rugs. We take anything we can; we cut and we shave them and then we added strong leather straps.”

Special care and attention is given to show costumes look worn! According to Clapton, she hired a breakdown team, just to give the desired wear and tear effects to the attires. “(We hired) breakdown team, consisting of painters and textile artists whose job is to destroy and repair the costumes in order to make them appear to be old and worn, giving them a more realistic feel.”

Clapton suggests that they have no scope to make duplicates of any attire as designing one itself is a consuming task. Since the costume department is needed to focus on detailing, it's difficult to make copies of the same outfits. So the artists, in fact, are adviced to wear them carefully.

"We are aware of other departments, such as visual effects. If costumes move too much, they are difficult for them to work with. We all try to work together to achieve the best result we can, said Clapton when asked if she has to keep CGI in mind while designing the attires.
