American President Donald Trump used the term ‘fake news’ so many times in his speeches that dictionary publisher Collins declared it as the word of the year. Now, to immortalize the overused term more, it is engraved in fashion. Topshop, a popular fashion retailer is now selling jeans which have strips of fake news at the side.
Trump has several times used the term fake news against media reports which have criticized him or his administration. The term has ended up becoming too mainstream that it is now adorned as fashion. It is a blue jean with a red strip running to the length of the pant at the side. On the red strip is written ‘FAKE NEWS’ in white. The jeans are being sold at $90 and it is bizarre as the site pop-up claims it to be the trending item currently.
A more into the background of the trend, Donald Trump is planning to have ‘Fake News Awards’ which will be for the mainstream media who do biased reportage of his administration. To all the unflattering stories written against him are Trump’s categorization of ‘fake news,’ making it a mockery. But what is bothersome is how this mockery is turning into a fashion statement. Not everyone was happy with this trend and Topshop got criticised. It is also said that the jeans are now being taken down.
Given the amount of repetitive words Trump keeps using in his speeches, should we anticipate more such bizarre trends coming in fashion? How about covfefe? That non-existing word trended for quite a while. 2018 starting with such a bizarre fashion trend, what more can we look forward to in the coming year?
