A Democratic party politician in the U.S. state of Wisconsin released a video campaign ad this week. But what is different about it is that as Kelda Roys talks about her candidacy, the video also shows her breastfeeding her 4-month-old baby. In the ad, titled “Our Girls,” Kelda Roys speaks about her work on a bill to ban the chemical BPA from baby bottles when she was a state representative.

During the ad, Democrat Kelda Roys is handed her infant daughter and starts breastfeeding, as she talks about the issues that are important to her as well as highlighting her political experience. The ad also features her older daughter.

Roys explained after her ad went viral that, “Anybody who’s ever had a baby can tell you that they are unpredictable,” she said. “I just did what I have been trained by her to do, which is to immediately grab her and feed her, and I just sort of didn’t think about it.”

She said that she has had “tremendous support” in response to the ad, including from women from across the party line. Roys, 38, is one of at least a dozen Democrats running in hopes of unseating current Republican Governor Scott Walker. She told HuffPost that being a mother is a “big reason” that she is running for governor.

“I cannot have my children growing up in a world where we don’t value public education and we are destroying natural resources,” she said. “What sets me apart from the rest of the field is not that I have a baby, but I have a track record of getting things done, of accomplishing progressive policies for people of this state.”

Kelda Roys’ ad highlights her role as a mother as well as a citizen and a politician. The ad shows how the roles are not exclusive to each other and in fact provide for inspiration to her different facets of life. The ad highlights that women multitasking – of feeding your children while working are a very real fact in today’s world.

Roys’ ad can also be juxtaposed with another ad that we saw in India last week. Of the model Gilu Joseph's smiling photographs breastfeeding an infant first featured on the cover of the magazine Grihalakshmi. The ad went viral across social networking sites. The author’s aim had been to send across a message that lactating isn't something which should make the woman feel embarrassed about it. But instead of acknowledging breastfeeding as one of the most natural acts that happen between a mother and her child, the ad was criticized for exploiting a woman’s body, sexualizing a mother and more. And for India’s sake, this narrative needs to change.
