New Delhi, July 12: A day after Yogendra Yadav accused the Narendra Modi government of targeting his family, the Income Tax department on Thursday linked the raids at the hospitals and homes of the Swaraj India chief's sister with a broader investigation against fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi.

During the investigation, it was found that Yogendra Yadav's nephew had bought jewellery worth about Rs 6 lakh - more than half of it paid in cash - from Nirav Modi's jewellery showroom, officials of the Income Tax department said. This led the Income Tax department to conduct raids at Yadav's family.

After the raids, tax officials seized Rs 29 lakh and evidence of tax evasion in the form of cash receipts of hospital transactions, reported NDTV. Meanwhile, the family of Yogendra Yadav said they just bought a ring worth Rs 3.5 lakh from Nirav Modi's showroom in New Delhi.

"We cannot judge why the raids happened. Our only connection with Nirav Modi is that a ring worth Rs. 3.5 lakh was bought from a Nirav Modi jewellery showroom in Delhi in February 2017. All the money and assets involved came from our taxable income," the family said in a statement.

Earlier, in a series of tweets, Yadav said two hospitals run by his sister's family in Haryana's Rewari were raided by Income Tax officials on Wednesday, two days after he concluded his nine-day visit to the state to mobilise the people over MSP and other issues.
