Yash, 12-Year-Old Royal Bengal Tiger Dies of Cancer at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

A Royal Bengal tiger diagnosed with extremely rare cancer died at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on Tuesday. Yash who was born in the national park breathed his last at 5:45 pm earlier this week. The 12-year-old tiger was born to tigress Basanti and tiger Palash. 'Yash' used was the main attraction for tourists visiting Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The wild cat suffered from illness proceeding from multi-organ failure and progressive cachexia. The pathology department of the Bombay Veterinary College conducted the postmortem of the carcass. An official said that taxidermist Dr Santosh Gaikwad would conduct taxidermy on 'Yash'. According to the prescribed protocol, post mortem examination was conducted and then the carcass was cremated to flames. The authorities had brought tigress 'Bijli' and 'Masanti' from Pench in Madhya Pradesh for mating them with Yash and another tiger named 'Anand'. According to the pathologists from the Bombay Veterinary College, officials from the national park said that the tiger was diagnosed with embryonal type cancer, 'rhabdomyosarcoma'. In the last one year, the tiger was operated twice for a growth on his face. Following which, during the recovery period, Yash had lost a lot of weight. The officials explained that Yash died due to the complications including loss of body condition and multiple-organ failure.
