What Is a Rape Kit? Police Station, Hospitals to Now Be Equipped for Quick Investigation

New Delhi, June 6: Looking at the increase in crimes against women and minors in India and to hasten the process of investigation, Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister has announced that police station, hospitals will not be equipped with rape evidence kits. The Ministry of Women and Children Development (WCD) will be distributing these kits.

According to an ANI report, Gandhi said, "We will be buying 'Rape Kits'. Each rape kit will be given to every police station and every hospital. So that, when a victim goes in, then all the medical investigation can be put into the kit and immediately sent to the closest forensic lab."

According to a PTI report, the kit comprises essential items which will help in furnishing evidence such as blood and semen samples in cases of rape and sexual assault. The kits will also contain instructions on the evidence that needs to be collected from the crime scene. Further, the results from the medical tests will be provided within two months of sending the kits to the closest labs. Forensic labs would come up in Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Bhopal and Guwahati.
