Kolkata, May 2: A pregnant relative of a BJP candidate in the upcoming panchayat polls was allegedly raped in West Bengal's Nadia district. According to reports, BJP has accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) goons of committing the crime, and they cited the reason was to teach them a lesson for daring to contest the May 14 polls. As per an NDTV report, TMC has dismissed the allegation as baseless.
According to the family members of the victim, TMC goons were threatening them to withdraw the nomination for the last few days. The sister-in-law of the victim is contesting the gram panchayat polls on a BJP ticket.
Apparently, before the incident took place, the BJP candidate's husband was also kidnapped but was released later on. The intention was to put pressure on her to withdraw her nomination from the polls. The BJP candidate has been quoted in a report saying, "After my husband was released a group of men entered our home and beat my mother at 2 am (on Sunday). They then sexually assaulted my sister-in-law, who was six-month pregnant. She was beaten black and blue and kicked in her stomach."
