West Bengal Panchayat Election 2018: Presiding Officer Rajkumar Roy Killed

As a result of the violence, repolling took place in 19 districts out of 20 on May 17.

In a shocking incident, Rajkumar Roy, Presiding Officer deputed in Raiganj, West Bengal for Panchayat Election was kidnapped on duty from polling booth. He was found murdered near a railway track later. BJP Bengal tweeted about the incident and used the hashtag #SaveBengal.

On the day of the polling on May 12, there was widespread violence during the West Bengal Panchayat polls. It claimed atleast 25 lives, and left around 43 people injured. Polling booths were mainly targeted during the violence after clashes broke out between Trinamool Congress supporters and opposition party workers.

Sambit Patra tweeted about the news, and expressed shock at what has happened.

Shiv Prakash also tweeted about the incident and said that democracy has been murdered in Mamata Banerjee's state.

Crude bombs were also hurled near several polling stations on May 12. Several party members of the CPI(M), the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and other parties associated with the Left Front, staged protests outside the State Election Commission office against the incidents that marred the panchayat election. Unidentified armed goons stole the ballot boxes at gunpoint. As a result of the violence, repolling took place in 19 districts out of 20 on May 17.
