Uttar Pradesh, July 27: Walmart India has plans of creating atleast 30,000 local jobs by setting up 15 stores in the state. According to a PTI report, Walmart India, which runs four Cash and Carry stores in UP, recently launched a fulfilment centre (FC) in Lucknow, and created 1,500 new skilled jobs. "Each store is likely to create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, thereby generating at least 30,000 local jobs in the state," said Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Rajneesh Kumar who represented Walmart India in the Investment Summit, told PTI from Mumbai.
Walmart, the US retail giant, has recently, entered the Indian e-commerce space, by buying a majority, 77 percent stake in homegrown e-comm brand Flipkart for $16 billion. This is a great strategy by the brand to enter the Indian market and compete with Amazon, which continues to be at a dominant spot in the e-comm category.According to reports, it is highly likely that in future, the brand will leverage Flipkart to give wider visibility of such artisan/weaver clusters.
Walmart looks to double wholesale presence in India, will open 20 stores over next three years. The brand currently operates 21 cash and carry stores across 19 cities.
