New Delhi, June 27: After fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya broke his silence and vowed to pay his dues with every bank on Tuesday, he has again tweeted explaining the reason, why he chose to speak on the issue now. Mallya said, "Some people have been asking why I chose to make a statement at this time. I have made my statement because UBHL and myself have filed an application before the Hon’ble Karnataka High Court on June 22, 2018, setting out available assets of approximately Rs. 13,900 crores."

He further added, "We have requested the Courts permission to allow us to sell these assets under judicial supervision and repay creditors, including the Public Sector Banks such amounts as may be directed and determined by the Court. If the criminal agencies such as ED or CBI object to the sale of assets, it will clearly demonstrate that there is an agenda against me “the Poster Boy” beyond recovery of dues. I continue to make every effort, in good faith to settle with the banks. If politically motivated factors interfere, there is nothing I can do."

Mallya goes on say that, " It is sad that the narrative seems to question my honest intentions. There are no delaying tactics or any agenda to gain brownie points. What needs to be appreciated is a bona fide offer and commitment placed before the Hon’Ble Karnataka HC. Let Justice play its part."

This has been his first public statement in the last two years, where he clarified that he has not fled from the country, but is in talks with banks to repay a substantial proportion of the money that Kingfisher Airlines had defaulted on, pegging what was owed at was much less than the Rs 9,000 crore the banks were demanding.

Mallya fled to Britain in March 2016 after being pursued for recovery of Rs 8,191 crore owed to a consortium of 17 Indian banks by his now defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He has been living in London since then despite summons from Indian courts and law enforcement agencies to appear before them for trial in various cases.
