Bareilly, June 23: In yet another instance of killing under the pretext of beef-selling, a butcher from Bareilly who was mercilessly thrashed by Uttar Pradesh police personnel has succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased, identified as Salim Qureshi alias Munna, who was picked up on June 14 and allegedly beaten up by at least two constables at a private wedding hall in Bareilly, died at Delhi's AIIMS on Friday.
Qureshi's wife Farzana, in her complaint, has named Kankartala police post incharge Ali Mian Zaidi, along with Shripal and Harishankar as the accused. The trio have been placed under suspension, said Senior Superintendent of Police Kamlesh Bahadur.
Farzana, in her complaint, claimed her husband was picked by the Kankartala police on the behest of corporator Anjum Khan, who charged Qureshi of slaughtering a cow and selling its meat. An investigation is being conducted to ascertain the charges.
While Qureshi's body was brought back yesterday from AIIMS to Bareilly, the locals refrained from burying the mortal remains till the administration issued an assurance on justice being meted out in the case.
In a separate incident in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur, 45-year-old Qasim was lynched to death by self-styled cow gau rakshaks or the cow vigilantes on rumours of cow slaughter.
