Under Flak, Ex-Karnataka DGP HT Sangliana Defends 'Good Physique' Remark Against Nirbhaya's Mother
Facing criticism for his remarks, the former top cop said the media is misinterpreting his statements.
Bengaluru, Mar 16: Former Karnataka DGP H T Sangliana, while speaking at the Nirbhaya Awards in Bengaluru on Women's Day, had stoked a row by making a controversial remark on Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi.
"I see Nirbhaya’s mother, she has such a good physique. I can just imagine how beautiful Nirbhaya would have been," the ex-DGP was quoted as saying.
Facing flaks for his remarks, the former top cop said the media is misinterpreting his statements.
"I said it in order to emphasise the importance of protection and security to women. They should be given protection at all times," Sangliana was further quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Marking her dissent against the former DGP's statement, Nirbhaya's mother said, "It would have been better if he had spoken about our struggle than making a personal remark. It shows that people's mentalities in our society has not changed."
Nirbhaya was brutally gangraped and murdered on December 16, 2012. Following her death, a massive protest broke out in the national capital, demanding the government to rejuvenate the law and order mechanism to protect the female populace.
