When the Bill was introduced in Lok Sabha this June, Congress veteran Shashi Tharoor, along with AIMIM chief and Hyderabad lawmaker Asaduddin Owaisi alleged that the Bill does not empower the Muslim women and is only intended to target male members of the minority community. They called the law violative of Article 14 and 15 of the Indian Constitution. Parties like the Congress, the Trinamool Congress and the DMK have demanded that it be sent to a parliamentary committee for scrutiny.
