Srinagar, May 7: A tourist in Kashmir was reported dead after being injured in a stone hurling incident in Budgam district. The deceased, identified as 22-year-old R Thirumani, belonged to Chennai.
Thirumani, reports said, sustained injuries during a stone-pelting protest at Srinagar-Gulmarg road near Narbal earlier on Monday.
He, along with a local girl, were rushed to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in capital Srinagar after being hit with stones during the protest.
While the girl is reported to be stable, Thirumani succumbed to the injuries.
A case has been registered at the Magam police station, under whose range the stone pelting incident was reported. A senior police official, while speaking to reporters, said Thirumani had sustained severe injuries on his head and nose.
The FIR has been lodged under sections 148, 247, 307 and 336 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) . "The miscreants involved will not be spared. We have launched a search operation," the officer was reported as saying.
The demise of the Chennai tourist comes in the backdrop of a spurt in stone-pelting incidents to protest the counter-militancy operations in South Kashmir.
Clashes between locals and the security forces were reported in Srinagar, Shopian and Pulwama after five terrorists, including Hizbul Mujahideen's Saddam Paddar were eliminated on Sunday in Shopian.
Over 12 civilians, along with two police officials, were injured in the clashes. Jammu & Kashmir DGP S P Vaid, while congratulating the forces for neutralising the five militants, had also expressed disappointment over the support extended to the militants by the local populace.
