New Delhi, May 7: Hours after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning of thunderstorm and rains in a total of 11 states, gusty winds, dust storm and rains were reported in Delhi-NCR, Haryana and other parts of North India late on Monday.

Winds upto 100 km/hr were blowing in Gurugram, reports said, claiming that electricity was cut-off throughout the city as a precautionary measure.

IMD director Devendra Pradhan said the intensity of dust storm is not unprecedented. "We had issued the orange alert. This is a routing dust storm which occurs in the pre-monsoon region. Our only message to the people is that they need to be cautious," he said.

The governments of Delhi and Haryana have ordered the public and private schools to remain closed on Tuesday in view of the weather department's alert.

Educational institutes would also remain non-functional in Dehradun and Haridwar districts of Uttarakhand, as the storm is likely to hit the state tomorrow.

"The weather situation will remain rough till the evening of May 8. From May 9, the impact of western disturbance would cease to exist," Pradhan said.

Earlier in the day, dust storm and rains were reported in Tripura's Khowai district, where one individual died and nine others were left injured. Damage to public and private properties were also reported.

The fresh spell of storms come in the backdrop of rain and gusty winds ravaging Rajasthan, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh in the past week, killing a total of 124 people and leaving over 300 injured.
