Thunderstorm Hits Tripura: 1 Dead, 9 Injured in Khowai District, Confirms CM Biplab Kumar Deb
In the dust storm and rains which wrecked parts of North India last week, at least 124 were killed and over 300 left injured.
Agartala, May 7: Following the warning of thunderstorm issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in six northeastern states, gusty winds struck Tripura on Monday evening. At least one person was killed and nine others injured in Khowai district due to the dust storm, confirmed Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
The Tripura CM assured compensation to the deceased, as well as those affected. Disaster response units have also been pressed into action in Khowai, Deb confirmed, adding that public and private properties have been damaged in the district.
The IMD on Sunday had warned of torrential rainfall, along with thunderstorm and gusty winds in Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and the six northeastern states of Tripura, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
The weather department had also warned of a possible storm hitting the coastal region of Karnataka and Kerala.
In view of the IMD's warning, the Haryana government on Sunday ordered the closure of all public and private schools for the next two days.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had issued an advisory to the states, recommending the respective governments to take precautionary measures.
