New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court of India has refused to entertain PILs relating to the treatment of children suffering from Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. Commenting on the shortage of doctors in Bihar, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said "What do you want? That we open it up and try to fill up posts of doctors? We are trying to fill up posts of judges and you can see where we have got with that. There's a shortage of doctors, there's a shortage of judges, MPs, water, sunlight. What all do we look at?" More than 175 children died due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in Bihar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, had termed the AES deaths as "unfortunate" and "a matter of shame for the nation.
There have been several protests in the district over government's alleged apathy in tackling AES in the Bihar's Muzaffarpur district.
