GNS news agency, quoting police sources, mentioned that the PSO was guarding the BJP leader Mohammad Anwar Khan when shots were fired. The location where shots were fired as stated in the report is Balhama area of Khunmoh near Arash Medical College.
The report elaborates that the gunmen tried to snatch rifle from the PSO and two other guards. “The guards retaliated to the fire and foiled their attempt. A policeman was hit by a bullet in the shootout,” quoted the report.
The attack could be linked by experts to the growing anti-BJP sentiment in the Valley, despite the saffron party being a ruling coalition partner in the PDP-led government. In the aftermath of NIA raids against Hurriyat leaders, in connection to the cross-border terror funding case, the anti-BJP sentiment has intensified.
A section of Hurriyat leadership has also raked up the "communal agenda" of BJP, accusing the party of attempting to alter the Muslim demography of the Valley.
