New Delhi, August 28: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Centre and others saying that a five-judge Constitution Bench will hear all the petitions related to abrogation of Article 370, in the first week of October. CJI Ranjan Gogoi further allowed CPM leader Sitaram Yechury to meet party colleague Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, who has been detained in the Valley. He informed that police can take appropriate action if Yechury indulges in political activity during his visit.  The Apex court is also hearing the petitions seeking the removal of other restrictions including communication blockade in the state which is coming in the way of journalists to carry out their professional duties.

On August 16, while hearing the clutch of petitions challenging Article 370 abrogation in Jammu & Kashmir, the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi lashed out at petitioner ML Sharma, stating that his plea appears to be frivolous and is "simply not maintainable". Further reprimanding Sharma, CJI Gogoi said he failed to understand the petition despite reading throughout its content.

Earlier this month, the Central government bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two parts and scrapped the special status granted to the state of Jammu and Kashmir by modifying Article 370 of the Constitution. According to this, Jammu and Kashmir will now be a Union Territory with a legislative assembly, and Ladakh as a UT without a legislature. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had applauded Amit Shah for his speech in over the government's unprecedented move on Jammu and Kashmir.
