Kolkata, June 27: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee was admitted at Kolkata's Belle Vue hospital after suffering a cerebral attack. He was hospitalised on Monday night, after he fell severely ill, and was in a critical state. According to the recent update on his health, the hospital sources have said, "It was a hemorrhagic stroke with a medium size clot which is ordinary, but dangerous for a patient aged 89 years", as per news agency ANI.
According to Chatterjee's family members, he has been not keeping well for a long time. As per reports, he even stopped coming out for the routine morning walks.

In 2009, he was expelled from the CPI(M) for not adhering to the party-line when the Left moved a no-confidence motion against the then Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. Over the last eight years, he took a gradual hiatus from public life due to deteriorating health.
