Kolkata, June 27: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has been admitted at Kolkata's Belle Vue hospital after suffering a cerebral attack, news agency ANI reported.
Chatterjee was hospitalised on Monday night, reports said, after he fell severely ill. The hospital authorities later confirmed that he has suffered from a cerebral attack. His condition continues to remain critical.
According to Chatterjee's family members, the 89-year-old has been reeling under ill-health over the past few days. He had stopped coming out for the routine morning walk for the past few weeks, reports said.
Chatterjee, a six-time Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal's Bolpur constituency, was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for nearly five decades. In 2009, he was expelled from the CPI(M) for not adhering to the party-line when the Left moved a no-confidence motion against the then Manmohan Singh-led UPA government.
Chatterjee is best known for his role as a non-partisan Lok Sabha Speaker between 2004 to 2009. Over the past eight years, he took a gradual hiatus from public life due to deteriorating health.
