Patna, July 23: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Monday expelled Shankar Charan Tripathi from the party for criticising Congress president Rahul Gandhi. "RJD National spokesperson Shankar Charan Tripathi who spoke against Congress president @RahulGandhi in his personal capacity on No Confidence Motion day has been expelled from party," the party announced on Twitter.

Shankar Charan Tripathi slammed Rahul Gandhi for hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and later winking, during the no-confidence motion moved by the TDP in Lok Sabha on Friday. "It was not expected from a leader like him to wink on the floor of the House," Tripathi had said. The Congress is an ally of the RJD in Bihar.

On July 17, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati sacked newly-appointed party vice-president Jai Prakash Singh, a day after he said Congress president Rahul Gandhi could never succeed in Indian politics because he chose to follow his mother Sonia who was a foreigner. Singh was appointed as the BSP vice-president in May.

Mayawati said Singh's remarks reflected his personal opinion and were against the party's culture. "I came to know that yesterday, he (Singh) made a statement against the top national leadership of a rival party, thereby deviating from the policies of the BSP," she said in a statement.
