Kochi, July 2: A 20-year-old undergraduate student of Ernakulam Maharaja College was stabbed to death allegedly by members of Campus front in Kochi on Monday morning. Abhimanyu was a member of Students Federation of India (SFI) The 20-year-old was pursuing B.Sc Environmental Chemistry and lived in Vatavada village of Idukki.
He succumbed to his injuries immediately after he was brought to the nearby Government General Hospital. According to a report published in The Hindu, Abhimanyu was stabbed following a clash over wall graffiti welcoming newcomers to the campus. Two other students were injured in the attack. Nineteen-year-old Arjun sustained serious injuries during the attack. He Has been rushed to the Ernakulam Medical Trust Hospital.
The police have arrested three members of the Campus Front and its parent organisation, Popular Front of India (PFI) in connection with the killing. The body of Abhimanyu has been kept at the hospital’s mortuary. The SFI has called for a state-wide protest.
CPI(M) state secretariat member and former Rajya Sabha MP P Rajeev condemned the attack on the SFI workers and described it as a "planned" one carried out by forces with "extremist nature." He also said , "We have not heard about such a heinous attack on student activists in recent times. All the progressive forces should come forward to fight against such outfits with extremist nature.” Rajeev is also a former state leader of the SFI from Ernakulam district. According to the report, the classes in college have suspended for two days and the governing council of the college would meet to discuss the situation.
