BJP MP Subramanian Swamy said on Tuesday that being homosexual is ' not normal', and is against Hindutva. It needs medical research to find out if it can be cured, according to a report on ANI. These shocking statements were made by him, on the day when the Constitution bench of Supreme Court is hearing the pleas seeking scrapping of Section 377 of IPC which criminalises homosexuality. The petitions seek the protection of the sexual orientation and the rights of the people in the LGBTQ community.
In 2009, the Delhi high court had decriminalised gay sex, ruling that a ban on a consensual sexual relationship between gay men is a violation of fundamental rights. Thus, legalising homosexual acts between consenting adults. However, the Supreme Court had reversed the High Court order in December 2013 and pointed out that those indulging in gay sex will be prosecuted and sentenced under Section 377.
This is not the first time that Swamy has made such strong remarks about homosexual people. In 2015, he called homosexuality as a 'genetic flaw' and earlier this year, he highlighted the need for section 377, so that homosexuals who flaunt their sexual orientation can be punished.
