Mumbai, June 2: Amid the hot and humid weather conditions in Mumbai, lakhs of Mumbaikars faced inconvenience after the city witnessed massive power cuts during the week. Areas like Thane and Navi Mumbai were reeling under massive power outage after two transformers tripped at MSETCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd) in Kalwa during the early hours of the day.
In a bid to deal with the power shortfall, power utility firms, including BEST in island city, Tata Power and Reliance Energy in the suburbs and MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd) in Bhandup-Mulund, Thane and Navi Mumbai have started ‘rotational load-shedding’ for two to four hours, a report by TOI reported.
As per details by the sources, it is going to take nearly seven days for the first transformer, which got burnt in the fire, and 30-40 days for the second to get functional. Due to this, the city now has to brace for power cuts even more often. Mumbaikars will have to deal with more load-shedding for at least a week now due to the shortfall.
According to the report, an MSEDCL official said that they are carrying out cuts in phases and area-wise to minimise inconvenience. Meanwhile, a BEST official was quoted by TOI saying that Mumbai faced no cuts but due to shortfall of 250-300MW power in Mumbai, of which 100MW was for BEST consumers, they have resorted to cuts from 4pm, which would continue on Saturday.
The power cuts were seen in Mahim, Wadala, and Parel and then in south Mumbai and parts of western suburbs, including Dahisar, Borivli, Kandivli, Andheri. Eastern suburbs including Ghatkopar, Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Vikhroli, Powai-Kanjurmarg, Bhandup and Mulund were also largely hit.
