New Delhi, Mar 14: A massive ruckus broke out in the Gujarat assembly on Wednesday after Congress legislators demanded the ruling BJP to table Justice DK Trivedi Commission 's inquiry report in the killing of two children outside Asaram Ashram. After the war of words escalated, Congress MLA Pratap Dudhat lost his temper and attacked BJP counterpart Jagdish Panchal with a belt.

Following the assault, Dudhat, who represents the Savarkundla seat from the assembly, was escorted out of the House by marshals.

Panchal, along with other BJP MLAs, registered an official complaint with the Speaker.

The assembly proceedings were adjourned as the BJP, Congress MLAs continued to hurl abuses against each other.

According to the BJP, which has 99 legislators in the 182-member assembly, the Congress MLAs planned the assault in order prevent the House from functioning. The party has named three MLAs in its official complaint to the Speaker, seeking their suspension for resorting to violence.

Congress, meanwhile, has levelled counter-allegations against the BJP, accusing the party of attempting to muzzle the Opposition's voice in the assembly.

Following the Gujarat assembly elections in December 2017, the Opposition strength increased from 64 to 81, whereas, the ruling BJP was reduced from 115 to 99. Congress emerged as the second-largest party winning 78 constituencies.
