Punjab DSP Dies After 'Accidentally Firing at Himself' During Student Protest in Jaitu

Faridkot, Jan 29: The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Punjab's Faridkot district died on Monday after accidently firing himself during a protest being staged by the University College students in Jaitu, reports said.

Along with the deceased DSP Baljinder Singh Sandhu, another police personnel who was accompanying him suffered gunshot wounds. According to the HT report, the same bullet which pierced through Sandhu's head went on to hit the other official.

Inspector General Mukhwinder Singh Chhina was reported as saying that it was an "accidental fire", with Sandhu mistakenly pressing the gun trigger himself.

Sandhu had went to Jaitu to control the agitation taken out by two groups of students. According to reports, the protesters raised the slogans of "azaadi (freedom)" to mark their dissent, which angered the police officials on the spot.

Videos of the incident going viral on social media shows the police officials involved in heated argument with the students at the forefront. Amid the commotion, the gunshot was heard.

After Sandhu and his accompanying official were struck by the bullet, they were rushed to the Guru Gobind Singh Medical Hospital in Faridkot. While the DSP has been declared dead, the other police personnel is reported to be in a critical condition.
