London, April 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of Indian Business Vijaya Mallya’s extradition during his breakfast meet with British counterpart Theresa May on Wednesday, according to sources. An official statement has not been released regarding this issue. A spokesperson of 10 Downing Street said Theresa May and PM Modi had discussed cooperation between the two countries on legal matters, reported NDTV.
Liquor baron Vijay Mallya fled India in 2016 after defaulting on loans worth Rs 9,000 crore. He took loans from Indian banks to cover his lose from his non-functioning Kingfisher Airlines with the intention of not repaying them.
Opppostion parties has repeatedly attacked Modi government for Mallya’s exit from India. The opposition criticised the government for not able to bring back Mallya from United Kingdom (UK). Mallya is staying near London and leading a luxurious life there. He was arrested twice in London but was released on bail.
The Crown Prosecution service in London is representing the Indian government in British court. India has submitted a 2,000-page dossier in court as part of evidence against Vijay Mallya.
Prime Minister Modi is on a visit to London to attend Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The Prime Minister will have both bilateral and multilateral meetings with the heads of various nations. According to Foreign Secretary on Prime Minister’s visit to London said, “PM Modi and May also held discussions on wide range of issues including trade and investment, bilateral issues and international issues after which a joint trade review was held. The PM emphasised it needs to be balanced agreement which have mutual benefits.” During the meeting terrorism and radicalism was also discussed in the meeting. PM Modi also met Queen Elizabeth II.
