Lucknow, June 28: A row erupted in Uttar Pradesh ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to mark the 500th death anniversary of poet-saint Kabir Das. The controversy erupted after UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath refused to wear a skull-cap offered to him at the mausoleum of Kabir in Sant Kabir Nagar, where he had gone on Wednesday to check preparations ahead of Modi's visit.
A video shows a caretaker of the mausoleum Khadim Hussain offering Adityanath a skull cap, following which he holds his hand and stops him politely. The caretaker then requests Adityanath to hold the skull-cap in his hand, which the CM does.
The Opposition has attacked Yogi Adityanath for his act at the Kabirdas mazaar. “A CM has to take everyone together. If someone is offering you a cap, pag, it is just a gesture to show respect. People occupying top offices have to take everyone together," said Congress leader Pramod Tiwari as quoted by The Indian Express.
