Atishi, whose middle name "Marlena" combines Marx and Lenin, chose to use only her first name starting in 2018. She completed her high school at Springdales School, New Delhi, and earned a bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi in 2001. Atishi then pursued a master's in History at Oxford University with a Chevening scholarship in 2003 and continued her studies as a Rhodes scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 2005. She began her political career with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2013, playing a key role in policy development. In 2015, she supported Alok Agarwal during the Jal Satyagraha in Madhya Pradesh. In 2019, she contested against BJP's Gautam Gambhir in East Delhi but lost by over 4.5 lakh votes. However, she made a comeback in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, winning the Kalkaji seat by over 11,000 votes.
