Kolkata, May 30: On the day when kin of BJP cadres killed in West Bengal political violence have been invited for the swearing-in of Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi, another party worker has been found dead in Burdwan. The incident comes amid charges of "unleashing violence" being levelled against the state-ruling Trinamool Congress.
The deceased has been identified as 52-year-old sushil Mondal. As per the preliminary reports, Mondal was killed "using a sharp object". Local BJP workers have blamed alleged goons affiliated to the TMC of killing Mondal. The police has initiated an inquiry into the case. Mamata Banerjee To Skip PM Narendra Modi's Swearing-In Ceremony Over Allegations of Political Violence in West Bengal
On Wednesday, the kin of nearly 51 BJP workers killed in political violence over the last one year were invited to Delhi to attend the oath-taking event of PM-designate Modi.
The invitation drew a stinging response from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who accused the BJP of using a non-political event to score political gains.
"The ceremony is an august occasion to celebrate democracy, not one that should be devalued by any political party that uses it as an opportunity to score political points," she said.
Categorically denying the charge that political murders are being carried out under her reign, the Trinamool supremo said the casualties being referred to by the BJP are linked to "personal enmity, family quarrels and other disputes".
"I am seeing media reports that the BJP are claiming 54 people have been murdered in political violence in Bengal. This is completely untrue. There have been no political murders in Bengal," Banerjee said.
