Kolkata, May 17: In rural polls held in West Bengal on Monday, a total of 6,157 seats in 341 panchayat samiti seats were contested. The State Election Commission (SEC) is scheduled to declare the results today. The counting of votes is currently underway. Apart from the 341 panchayat samities, the rural elections also witnessed a contest for 622 zilla parishads and 3,385 gram panchayats. The polls witnessed the participation of 73 per cent electorate. Massive violence was also reported on the day of voting, leading to the death of at least 14 people.
As per the notification issued by the SEC in April, the panchayat samiti polls were to be contested on 9,216 seats. However, the ruling Trinamool Congress won a total of 3,059 panchayat samiti seats without a contest.
Panchayat Samiti Election Results 2013
In 2013, the a total of 9,240 seats were contested in 329 panchayat samitis. The TMC had emerged victorious on 5,306, followed by the Left Front on 2,839. The Congress had managed to win 918 seats.
The seat-wise wins led to the TMC controlling 214 of the 329 panchayat samitis contested, whereas, the Left Front and Congress could form its rule in 66 and 20, respectively.
While the TMC is expected to predominantly emerge winner in this elections as well, the results remain intriguing to see what the Left Front and Congress could retain, apart from the inroads made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in rural Bengal.
