Kolkata, April 29: Over 76 percent voter turnout was recorded in eight of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal that went to polls in the fourth phase of general elections today. Voting was held in Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Bardhaman Purba, Bardhaman - Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur and Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency. An above average voting percentage was registered despite widespread violence, including the attack on a Union Minister, clashes outside polling booths, hurling of bombs and EVM snags.
BJP leader Babul Supriyo's car was vandalised in West Bengal on Monday. According to a tweet by ANI, the car was vandalised outside the polling station in Asansol. Reports inform that after the incident was reported, police resorted to lathi-charge. According to a tweet by ANI, a clash between TMC workers and security personnel at polling booth number 199 in Asansol was reported on Monday. A TMC polling agent said that there was'no BJP polling agent was present at the polling booth.'
Meanwhile, Clashes broke outside Jamuria polling booth in Asansol of West Bengal. Also, Villagers boycott polls at Jemua's polling booth number 222 & 226 in Asansol due to the absence of central forces at the polling station. Polling has been suspended at the polling station as voters are protesting. The polling per cent recorded in the first phase for two seats was 69.44 per cent. In the second round of the polls in West Bengal, a total voter turnout of 75.27 per cent was recorded and for the third phase, it was 69 per cent. Now with EC more vigilant and more paramilitary forces deployed in the state, it is expected that the polling in eight Lok Sabha constituencies would be peaceful. The results would be declared on May 23.
