Karimpur, November 25: Joy Prakash Majumdar, Bharatiya Janata Party's vice president in West Bengal, was heckled and kicked allegedly by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday. Joy Prakash Majumdar is BJP's candidate for the by-election in Karimpur assembly constituency where polling was underway today. The attack on Majumdar was caught on camera. In the video, some people are seen heckling and kicking the BJP leader.

In Karimpur assembly seat, TMC supporters raised "go back" slogans when Majumdar tried to enter a booth. The police resorted to baton charge to disperse the mob. Local TMC leaders alleged that Majumdar attempted to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere. Following the assault, BJP leader Mukul Roy wrote to the Election Commission and informed it about the situation during assembly by-polls in West Bengal.

Seeking immediate intervention of the poll body, Mukul Roy stated: "Today 50 TMC goons surrounded, kicked and pushed BJP's Joy Prakash Majumdar." He also demanded the immediate removal of Superintendent of Police and Additional Superintendent of Police. Voting was underway in Karimpur, Kharagpur Sadar and Kaliaganj assembly constituencies in the state, with over 30 percent voter turnout till 11 am.

Two of the three Assembly constituencies - Kharagpur Sadar and Karimpur - fell vacant post general election as the sitting MLAs contested and won Lok Sabha seats. By-polls were necessitated in Kaliaganj following the death of Congress MLA Parmathanath Roy. The results will be declared on November 28.
