New Delhi, August 1: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday issued a three-line whip to its Rajya Sabha MPs to be present in the House tomorrow, on Friday, for voting on Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The BJP's whip comes as the government aims to pass important legislation in the Upper House of the Parliament, where the BJP is in minority, unlike the Lok Sabha. The government has been overseeing the passing of important legislation in the past few days as the Rajya Sabha saw the clearance of crucial bills including the Musim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act and the Right to Information (Amendment) Bill 2019 to name a few bills. On Thursday too, the Rajya Sabha passed the National Medical Commission Bill, 2019. The law seeks to repeal the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 with a National Medical Commission (NMC) to look over the functioning of medical education and practices in the country.
Earlier, the Parliament session was extended as the Union government decided to extend the Monsoon Session till August 7, 2019. This means that the Parliament will function for two weeks more than the original schedule as the rule says that if the session is extended by 10 sittings, then it will be extended by two weeks.
