New Delhi, June 17:  Virendra Kumar, BJP MP from Madhya Pradeshtook oath as the Protem Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Monday. Kumar, 65, is a seven-term member of Parliament and won the Lok Sabha polls from Tikamgarh. Kumar has replaced Sumitra Mahajan, who was the former Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Mahajan's term concluded with the end of the 16th Lok Sabha.

The Minister took oath on the day when the monsoon session of the Parliament begins. As pro-tem speaker, he will preside over the first sitting of the Lok Sabha and administer the oath of office to the newly elected MPs. The first session of the newly-constituted 17th Lok Sabha will be held from June 17 to July 26.

As pro-tem speaker, Kumar will also oversee the election of the Lok Sabha speaker. In the previous Modi government, Kumar was a minister of state. The main duty of the pro tem speaker is to administer the oath of office to new members of the Lok Sabha.

Kumar, a seven-time MP from Tikamgarh in Madhya Pradesh, was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1996, during the 11th Lok Sabha. The Minister has been re-elected to the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th Lok Sabha continuously.
