Hyderabad, May 23: Results for the Viluppuram Lok Sabha Constituency in Tamil Nadu has been declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI). D Ravikumar of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has won the seat. The counting of votes for the Viluppuram Lok Sabha Constituency began at 8 AM on Thursday, May 23. This is one of the 39 Parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu which went to poll on April 18. This constituency was converted into a reserved Villupuram constituency from Tindivanam during 2008 delimitation.
The constituency number of Viluppuram is 13 and is reserved for the Scheduled Caste category. It comprises of six legislative segments and has 1,068,171 voters. According to Election Commission of India 2009 data, the total electorates in the Viluppuram Lok Sabha constituency were 1,068,171 of which 526,372 are females and 541,799 are males. The town of Viluppuram is located in the Viluppuram District about 160 km from Chennai. In Tamil Nadu, this is the first time the BJP is having an official pre-poll alliance with one of the two major Dravidian parties. In the run up to the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) had fielded senior leader Vadivel Ravanan from the Villupuram reserved constituency. In February 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) announced a pre-poll alliance in Tamil Nadu for the upcoming polls. The BJP believes that the alliance will finally help it make inroads into the Dravidian state. The BJP-AIADMK and Congress-DMK’s alliance is expected to face considerable opposition from new entrants like Tollywood superstar Kamal Hassan’s Makkal Needhi Mandran, which will contest all 39 seats.
Polling in all the 39 parliamentary constituencies will be held on April 18. The voting will take place in single phase. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.
In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Rajendran S of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). won the Viluppuram seat by defeating Muthaiyan K Dr of the DMK. Rajendran had won the seat by 482,704 votes while Muthaiyan managed to garner only 289,337.
