Vellore, August 9: Results of the Lok Sabha elections 2019 in Vellore constituency is being declared by the Election Commission today. Counting of votes is currently underway. The polls, held on August 5, witnesses a tight contest between AIADMK leader AS Shanmugam and DMK candidate Kathir Anand. Stay tuned here for the live news and updates on Vellore election results emerging from the counting centre.

Polls in this Tamil Nadu constituency were deferred due to a massive cash haul by Election Commission officials in Vellore days before the voting was originally scheduled on April 18, 2019. This forced the polling body to postpone the election in Vellore to a later date. Kamal Hassan's MNM Did Not Contest Election from Vellore LS Seat

The electioneering was intense, as Shanmuganam's campaign was led by Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami himself, whereas, DMK president MK Stalin stepped in to seek votes for his candidate Anand.

In the polls held on August 5, a decent voter turnout was recorded. A total of 62.4 per cent of the registered electorate turned out to exercise their right to franchise.

The election comes in the aftermath of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's landslide victory in the parliamentary polls held in April-May. Though the AIADMK contested in alliance with the BJP in Tamil Nadu, the coalition failed to leave an impact. Out of the 38 parliamentary seats that went to polls in the state, the alliance led by DMK-Congress combine ended up winning 37 seats.
