Dehradun, November 20: The State Election Commission has initiated the counting of votes polled in the Uttarakhand civic elections 2018, held on Sunday. The results, slated to be announced by end of the today, will determine the fate of 84 of the 92 urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state. Among the civic bodies which went to polls included the key ULBs in Dehradun, Haridwar, Rudraprayag, Udham Singh Nagar and others. Stay tuned here for the live updates of results and early trends.
In the elections held on November 18, a total voter turnout of 60 per cent was recorded by the SEC. The polling body had earmarked 1,258 voting centres, 2,265 polling stations, 107 zones, and 282 sectors for smooth conduct of the elections.
The polls were held on ballot, which were stored in 52 strong rooms after the voting concluded.
The elections was embroiled in controversy as the ruling BJP alleged irregularity in electoral rolls, with names of party supporters and core voters allegedly missing in some regions. BJP state unit president Ajay Bhatt has demanded a rigorous probe and strict action against SEC officials responsible.
The civic elections are considered to be a litmus test for the Trivendra Singh Rawat-led BJP government, which stormed to power in Uttarakhand last year with a brute mandate. The party had won 57 of the 70 seats in the state. For the Congress, ULB polls could be a path to recovery leading to the 2019 general elections.
