Lucknow, October 22: With the Union government setting up a target to become USD 5 trillion economy by 2024, 15th Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh on Tuesday opined that for that to happen, Uttar Pradesh should first become a USD 1 trillion economy. Singh expressed his opinion at the meeting with the state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, where he went with the officials to review various flagship programmes running in the state.

Expressing his opinion at the after the meeting with the state Chief Minister, the Finance Commission Chairman said, as news agency ANI quotes, "If the goal of PM Modi is to make India a USD 5 trillion economy, then it's important that UP becomes a USD 1 trillion economy. Until and unless UP becomes a USD 1 trillion economy, Indian cannot become a USD 5 trillion economy." According to details, the Finance Commission reached Lucknow on October 21 and went to Varanasi to review the flagship programmes. Later on Tuesday, it began meeting with elected representatives of panchayat bodies, urban local bodies, trade and industry bodies and representatives of political parties of the state as well.

Among the concerns that were raised by representatives include lack of financial resources for development, property tax as a source of income, poor social indicators, water scarcity, the requirement for civic amenities like panchayat Bhawan, mortuaries, road and drainage infrastructure, need for the creation of check dams, etc.
